Moringa has an impressive range of medicinal applications that seem to stem from its impressive nutritional profile.

Moringa contains a profile of important minerals, protein, vitamins, beta carotene as well as some essential amino acids.

"The Moringa plant provides a rich and rare combination of zeatin, quercetin, beta-

sitosterol, chlorogenic acid and kaempferol," writes George Hodge in his book, Miracle Moringa.

Zeatin is “any of a class of plant hormones, produced by the roots and traveling

upward through the xylem, that promote tissue growth and budding and, on application, retard plant senescence.” It is found in corn, peas and spinach.

Quercetin is “a yellow crystalline pigment present in plants, used as a food supplement to reduce allergic responses or boost immunity.”

β-Sitosterol is one of several phytosterols with chemical structures similar to that

of cholesterol. Sitosterols are white, waxy powders with a characteristic odor. They

are hydrophobic and soluble in alcohols.”

Chlorogenic acid is “an important intermediate in lignin biosynthesis. This compound, known as an antioxidant, may also slow the release of glucose into the bloodstream after a meal.”

FUN FACT: Chlorogenic acid is an ester of caffeic acid and quinic acid. Chlorogenic acid is the major polyphenolic compound in coffee, isolated from the leaves and fruits of dicotyledonous plants. This compound, long known as an antioxidant, also slows the release of glucose into the bloodstream after a meal.

Kaempferol is a natural flavonol, a type of flavonoid, found in a variety of plants

and plant-derived foods, according to wikipedia.

"More than a dozen different moringa plant species exist around the world, but the most-used as a food source and supplement is Moringa oleifera. Found throughout sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia, this species has many names, including the Ben oil tree, drumstick tree, horseradish tree, and the "tree of life."

You can consume every part of the moringa tree, including the roots, bark, flowers, pods, seeds, and leaves. Traditional medicine practitioners have used moringa as a staple for centuries," writes Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, NP, founder of Global Healing.

Moringa Benefits for Energy & Weight Loss

"Not only can this unique plant boost your energy levels and sex drive, but it also promotes normal blood glucose levels, which, in turn, helps maintain a healthy weight.

The moringa tree's exceptionally high vitamin and nutrient content replenishes you at a cellular level. In a Discovery Channel documentary called Miracle Tree about moringa, it was stated that some people even begin to crave moringa for its invigorating properties.

The most likely reason for its health-giving, energy-boosting properties lies in the tree's nutritional benefits," Dr. Group reports.

So, as you can see, Moringa is a pretty powerful plant! I wonder if Popeye knew about moringa? But I digress, let's wrap it up with a moringa breakfast smoothie to jumpstart your morning!
